Stationen u.a.: Sohn eines Geschäftsmannes und einer Schriftstellerin. 1906-15 Studium in Harvard, Paris, Marburg, Oxford. 1916-18 Dozent in Oxford und London. 1925 Verlagsdirektor. 1927 erhält er die Britische Staatsbürgerschaft. 1932 Professor in Harvard.
